Norma Jean Harmon Carpenter

CARPENTER, Norma Jean Harmon, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2012 in Tucson. She was born in Fairmont, Nebraska, on October 7, 1923 and lived there through high school. She then became an elementary school teacher with her first teaching job in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming. About this time, she completed her degree at the Colorado State College of Education in Greeley. In 1947, she became a teacher in Ogallala, Nebraska and moved in 1949 to another teaching position in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She settled in Tucson about 1954 and remained an elementary school teacher in the Tucson Unified School District until her retirement. Norma was an avid traveler and met her husband, Douglas Carpenter on a trip to Mexico in 1959. They were married that year and moved to his home in Salt Lake City where they lived until his death in July 1968, whereupon Norma returned to Tucson. Apart from her career in education, Norma was keenly interested in quilling, collecting stamp covers, and making jewelry. She is survived by nephews and nieces and a sister-in-law. Cremation is to take place in Tucson with burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City next to her late husband, Douglas Carpenter. Arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
