Philip Norman Holtby resident of Toronto, Canada and "Snowbird", died on Saturday November 12, 2011 at the age of 80. He loved the mountains, the uninterrupted horizons, the blazing sunsets, the solitude and the peace of the desert in Tucson, Arizona where he spent his leisure time. Philip grew up in Toronto with his father, Norman George and mother, Jessica Elaine (nee Kennedy) and his older brother, David. His beloved wife, Eva Maria predeceased him in 2003. He is survived by four happy children and six fun and energetic grandchildren: J. Caren Holtby (Alan Hannebauer) of Vancouver, BC, Canada; Ann H. Holtby of Toronto, Ont Canada and daughter, Breton M. Roy; Christopher N. Holtby (Ann) of Dallas TX and sons, Griffin O., William W. and Gavin P. Holtby. Markus R. Holtby (Carol) of Larchmont, NY and daughters, Katherine G. and Charlotte Eva. Philip was born in 1931, growing up during the depression in Toronto, Canada. He attended grade school in Toronto, high school at Ridley College and the Ontario College of Art. A first permanent job as a runner for a brokerage firm led to an illustrious 40 year career in the Canadian securities industry. Philip strove to enrich the lives of those friends and colleagues he knew, particularity the young, and above all enjoyed his personal life with his wife and family. When his interest in his business career diminished, he retired at the age of 59 to pursue his multitudinous interests including contemporary art, reading, travel, skiing and time with his family. Also, in remembrance of his wife he endowed the annual "Eva Holtby Lecture on Contemporary Culture" at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. Philip participated in many community activities including; the Toronto Junior Chamber of Commerce; the Earlscourt Children's Home; a governor of the Toronto Stock Exchange and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Royal Ontario Museum. In addition he was supportive of his wife Eva's community activities. In lieu of flowers please consider, in Philip's memory, a donation to the Salvation Army or the, "Eva Holtby Lecture Contemporary Culture," at the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) 100 Queens Park, Toronto, ON, M5S 2C6 Canada.
