Phillip Magaran Obituary

Mr. Phillip L. Magaran Passed away in his sleep at home in Tucson on April 3, 2015. He was 92 and died from congestive heart failure. He had lived in Tucson since retiring here in 1989, and enjoyed good health until very recently. Mr. Magaran was born in Fresno, California on November 5, 1922. He served in the Pacific in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. He was a cook in the military and always retained his discriminating tastes for healthy food. His primary occupation was as a hairdresser and cosmetologist, and he owned and operated the Waldorf Beauty Salon on Clement and 10th in San Francisco from the 1950's through 1970's. He later moved to Reno, NV, where he worked for the City. After retiring to Tucson he worked in volunteer services at Tucson General Hospital. Mr. Magaran was a fit, sharp-witted man with many friends who enjoyed his feisty personality. He lived an active life, visited his brother, Adrian and family in Alaska, played golf for years, and regularly walked his dogs, including Zoom, Ginger and Dice. He enjoyed the company of many good friends and neighbors and visits from his Alaskan niece. The family wishes to thank many people for the excellent companionship and care he received, including, best friends, Mario Pauker, Maryann Beerling, Susan Sotelo and other members of the Colonia Del Rey Homeowners' Association; Hospice Family Care including especially Sue Taylor and The Forum at Tucson. Mr. Magaran was predeceased by his mother, Tessa de Zeeuw; stepfather, Cmdr. Adrian de Zeeuw; brothers, Carl Magaran and Adrian de Zeeuw Jr.; sisters, Betty Fuller and Marilyn de Zeeuw and his ex-wife, Lorraine. He leaves behind nieces and nephews, including Maureen, Adrian and Brian de Zeeuw all of Anchorage, AK, Denny Fuller of Bandon, OR and Tessa Morgan of California, many good friends and his dog, Dice.
