Robin Mendez Obituary

ROBIN JOSEPH MENDEZ After a courageous 2-yr. battle with cancer, our cherished father, son, brother and uncle Rob (“Robbie”) passed peacefully Thursday evening, June 13, 2019, at Peppi’s House Hospice, surrounded by his devoted family. Rob was known and loved for his infectious sense of humor, his quick wit, and his care and compassion for others. Rob never met a stranger, always making new friends everywhere he went. He was a die-hard U of A “super-fan” (following in Dad’s footsteps!), loved good wines, live music, and his Hawaiian shirts! His faith in God was unwavering, even during the darkest times, and his love and devotion to family was our anchor. Most importantly, he was a Warrior who inspired us all -and motivated many- to value their health with check-ups and screenings. Rob was born to Aida and Joe Mendez on January 12, 1960. A proud graduate of Rincon High School (1979) where he was on the Gymnastics Team; he attended the University of Arizona and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Fraternity. Rob participated in and completed the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, on Oct. 10, 1987, after which he opened his own shop, Tri-Tech Sports. Later, he was employed at TMC hospital in Labor and Delivery, next in General Surgery at Northwest Hospital, totaling over 20 years. After a complete career change, Rob found Mortgage Banking a challenge he would enjoy, working at Bank of America for a short time before his fateful diagnosis. Rob was predeceased by our father Joe M. Mendez, and is survived by his daughters, Haley Kathryn and Hannah Joe Mendez; his loving mother and faithful caregiver, Aida Mendez; sisters Charmaine Hill, Patricia Puig (Emilio), and Phyllis Cagle (Cary); many cousins, nieces, nephews, and legions of friends, neighbors, and co-workers who will cherish his big heart, warm smile, and the love of life he shared with all. Our sincerest thanks to Rob’s oncologists, Dr. Natalie Stanton (Arizona Oncology), and Dr. Emad Elquza and his amazing team at Arizona Cancer Center. For the exceptional care and compassion given to Rob, and extended to our whole family, we are forever grateful to the entire staff at Peppi’s House Hospice. A Celebration of Rob’s Life (“Hawaiian-print optional”) will be held on Sat., July 13, 2019, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 215 S. Craycroft Rd., Tucson, Az., Rosary at 9:30 a.m., Mass at 10:00 a.m., and reception immediately following. Burial will be private.
