Rupert Friday

Rupert H. Friday, M.D. 12/18/1912 - 3/16/2011 Rupert H. Friday, M.D., a retired surgeon, obstetrician, and gynecologist at Mercy Hospital and Magee Women's Hospital, both now a part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, died at age 98 of complications resulting from a stroke in Tucson, Arizona, on March 16, 2011. Dr. Friday, currently a resident of Tucson, served as President of the Pittsburgh Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and as Chairman of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, District 3. He graduated from Georgetown University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He began his career with a General Surgical Residency at Mercy Hospital, and then became Chief Resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Temple University in Philadelphia. In addition to his love of medicine, Dr. Friday was an avid golfer, and master bridge player, as well as an upland game and fly fishing enthusiast. He was a member of the Pittsburgh Field Club for 86 years. He played in the National Amateur Golf Championship twice, was Senior Club Champion at the Pittsburgh Field Club ten times and West Penn Senior Champion. He made 14 holes-in-one over his lifetime. He also bred and raised English Pointers. He joyously shared all of these interests with his family. Dr. Friday is survived by his three daughters, Mary Lee Rafferty of New Canaan, CT; Anne Friday Parker of Tucson, AZ and Marjorie Friday Roberts of MA; three sons-in-law, ten grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren. He was married to Mary Lee McAllister who predeceased him. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Scholastica's Church, Brilliant Avenue, Aspinwall, PA, on Tuesday morning, March 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Funeral arrangements are being made by the WEDDELL- AJAK FUNERAL HOME, 100 Center Avenue, Aspinwall, 412-781-1897. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Dr. Rupert Friday to UPMC Mercy Hospital, Fund for the Poor, 1400 Locust Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15219. Local arrangements by ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Dodge Chapel.
