Sofia Abrams

Sofia Abrams passed away on April 17, 2013, after a brief illness. She was born in Romania in 1929, escaped with her family from Nazi occupation during World War II, and emigrated to Mexico. In 1949 she married and moved to the United States, first to Berkeley, California, later to Glencoe, Illinois. In addition to raising her three daughters, she was involved in Women for Peace, founded a community nursery school, and taught Spanish to grade school students. In 1968 the family moved to Tucson, where she continued to teach Spanish, was a docent at Sabino Canyon, served as president of the Tucson Chapter of the Brandeis National Committee, worked as a translator at University Hospital, and was active in the Democratic party. She had a rich, interesting life and was fortunate to be able to travel the world. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and her generous spirit attracted a community of people. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Herbert Abrams, and her grandson, David. She is survived by her brother, Octavio; daughters, Linda (Stan), Ellen (Terry) and Amy (Tony); and grandchildren, Julie, Dan and Joshua. A Memorial Celebration will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Jewish Community Center from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Donations in her honor can be made to the Community Food Bank, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona or Carondolet Hospice.
