Surath Banerjee

Surath K. Banerjee, Ph.D. was born November 3, 1938 in Rajipur, West Bengal, India and died October 29, 2011 in Oro Valley, Arizona, after a three-year battle with multiple myeloma. Dr. Banerjee earned his B.Sc. (Honors) and M.Sc. from Calcutta University and his Ph.D. from Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India. He did postdoctoral work at the University of Arizona Department of Chemistry (1967-69), and later at Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana before returning to the University of Arizona, where he was a research associate. Spending 23 years in Detroit, Michigan, he was associate professor of pathology at Wayne State University and retired in 2003 as section chief-chemistry at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Detroit. He proudly became a United States citizen in 1974. He was an avid golfer and loved to travel. Just in the past 10 years, he visited Egypt, Africa, India, and Latin America. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Cynthia Banerjee of Oro Valley; his son, Ronadip R. Banerjee, M.D., Ph.D. and his daughter-in-law, Claudia I. Cardenas, M.D. of Menlo Park, California; his sister, Bela Majumdar of Rome, Italy; and several brothers and sisters in India. At the family's request, no services will be held. According to Hindu custom, the body has been cremated, and ashes will be scattered in the sacred River Ganges in India. Arrangements entrusted to ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel.
