Thomas McHugh Obituary

Thomas J. McHugh 1/29/1922 - 8/17/2011 Born in Rochester, NY to Owen and Mary Ann McHugh, the ninth of 12 children. Tom attended West High School and Cornell University. He enlisted in the Air Force the day after Pearl Harbor. He served as a B-17 bombardier and was shot down on his 13th mission. He was a German POW for almost two years. Tom escaped with three others and, after 27 days in hiding, was rescued by American troops. He returned to Rochester in 1945 where he met and married Dorothy Memmel, his wife of 60 years. They moved to Tucson in 1951 where Tom attended the UofA. He graduated from the UofA Law School, Class of '57. He practiced law for 25 years in Tucson. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Mary Ann (Stewart) Park and son, Kevin McHugh. He is also survived by two sisters, Stella Beahan and Ann Wakeman and two brothers, Terrance and Alfred, as well as many nieces and nephews. Tom was a kind and noble man who dearly loved his family, his church, his country and especially Tucson, Arizona. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2011. The family is grateful to the doctors and staff at St. Joseph's Neuro and Peppi's House, a hospice facility.
