Thomas Middleton

Thomas J. Middleton Jr. retired Circuit Court Judge for the State of Virginia, went to his eternal reward on February 2, 2011. He was born in Everett, MA on October 2, 1928. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the 11th Airborne. Following his military service, Tom attended Boston College, graduating Cum Laude. After graduation Tom went to work for Union Carbide in Charleston WVA, where he met and married Kathleen Gatens. He then attended William and Mary Marshall-Wythe School of Law. He practiced law in Fairfax Virginia for 20 years prior to accepting a Judgeship in the 19th Circuit Court of Virginia. During his time in Fairfax, he was active in St. Leo's Catholic Church and various civic activities, including the Fairfax Bar Association. Tom and Kathleen raised their family in Fairfax and after retiring moved to Jacksonville Florida. They moved to Tucson Arizona in 2001. During his time in Tucson, Tom met and befriended many people. Some became close friends providing special support and comfort during his battle against many health issues over the last years. Tom was a devoted family man who had a passion for sailing. He took great pride in intellectually challenging his grandchildren, never missing the opportunity to stress the importance of education. He loved the political debate and spirited conversations around the kitchen table. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he has entered. Tom is survived by his wife of 55 years and four children, Thomas J. III, and his wife, Brenda of Idaho Falls, Phillip N. and his wife, Cathy of Tucson, Mary and her husband, John Mettenburg of Cedar Rapids IA, and Ruth and her husband, Tom Chabreck of Tigard, OR. Tom also left behind 18 wonderful grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Helen; his brother, George and Sisters-in-law, Barbara and Dorothy. Visitation will be Monday, February 7, 2011 from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at ADAIR FUNERAL HOMES, Avalon Chapel. 8090 North Northern Avenue. Tom's life will be Celebrated by family and friends at St. Odilia Catholic Church at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association or Diabetes Campaign.
