William (Bill) Cobbledick Obituary

William Gordon Cobbledick, Bill Cobbledick, 89, a former Ohio auto dealer and city of Tucson public relations director, died Monday (August 12, 2013) at home in Tucson. He leaves his wife of 67 years, Jacquelyn Cobbledick, as well as sons, Daniel W. and Keith G. Cobbledick, and daughter, Beth Kane, all of Tucson. He is also survived by a brother, Dorn Cobbledick, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and grandson, Fenix (aka Connor) of Portland, Ore. He was predeceased by parents, Doris and Gordon Cobbledick. During World War II, Bill served in the Navy SeaBees as a photographer. He then entered journalism as a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, moving on to the Newspaper Enterprise Association in Cleveland as an editor and columnist. He and his brother, Dorn, established the Cobbledick Buick-Oldsmobile dealership in Ashtabula, Ohio, in 1960. Dorn moved the business to Shaker Heights, in suburban Cleveland, in 1976. A graduate of Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, Bill attended Ohio University. His attachment to Tucson began after his dad, Gordon Cobbledick, as the Cleveland Plain Dealer's sports columnist, followed the Cleveland Indians to Tucson for spring training. Bill and his family visited and grew to love the place. They moved to Tucson in 1969. Later Bill would serve as Tucson's assistant city manager for community relations. His love for camping and traveling with his family is evident in articles he penned for the Tiger Tales camper van newsletter and Sport Aviation magazine. An amateur pilot, Bill turned his longstanding interest in aviation into a fulfilling hobby -- building, along with friends, several of the small planes known as homebuilt "experimental" aircraft.
