William Houston Obituary

William Robert Montgomery Houston, M.D. 88, of Mansfield, Ohio and Tucson, Arizona passed away on August 24, 2011. He practiced Ophthalmology at 456 Park Avenue West, Mansfield, Ohio for over 40 years. He was born in Mansfield, Ohio on November 13, 1922, the son of William T. and Frances (Hursh) Houston. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1940 and from Oberlin College. He earned his medical degree from Western Reserve Medical School in 1948. He interned at Methodist Hospital of Brooklyn and completed residencies at Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He married Marguerite LaBau (Browne) Houston on April 25, 1968 in St. James Episcopal Church, New York City. A lifetime genealogist, he helped found The Ohio Genealogical Society, which was incorporated in 1959, and he served as its first president and later as chairman of the board and trustee. During the Korean War, he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. He served on the Mansfield, Ohio city school board from 1962 to 1965 and was president of the Mansfield Symphony from 1965 to 1968. He is survived by his three children, Erling (Jenny) Houston of Kensington, Maryland, Elisabeth (Bill) McCaleb of Tucson, Arizona and Selby (Stephanie) Houston of Louisville, Kentucky. He is also survived by six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marguerite Labau (Browne) Houston; his sister, Erma (Houston) Smedal and his brother, Selby Harlan Houston.
