Bervin Cooksey Obituary

Bervin Lee “Bird” Cooksey, 82, of Atkins, Arkansas passed away peacefully on February 5, 2017 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Little Rock. He was surrounded by his loving family. Bervin was born May 18, 1934 to Bessie Laycook Cooksey and Enoch Cooksey. He was the youngest of seven and grew up loving to fish and hunt. Mr. Cooksey, as he was affectionately called by the “knot heads”, drove a bus for the Atkins School District for many years. Self-employed and part owner of the Loner Drive-In, friends would often join Bird for a morning cup of coffee. After the closing of the Loner, many would see him around town frequenting local coffee shops for the latest gossip and hunting or fishing lies. He was an avid fan of the Atkins Red Devils and rarely ever missed a football game. Bird is survived by his wife Wanda Cooksey of Atkins, daughter Ashley J. Cooksey of Batesville, daughter Beth Lee and David of Atkins, daughter Lynn Failla and son-in-law Charlie of Conway, son Edward Neumann, Jr. of Atkins, and daughter Melinda Fortenberry and son-in-law Henry of Mayflower; grandchildren Christy Harris and husband Charles “Scooter” of Atkins, Heather Autry of Atkins, Russell Autry and granddaughter-in-law Brittany of Cabot, Hannah Fortenberry of Mayflower, Brandt and Rhianna Crouch of Batesville; great-grandchildren Addie and Gus Harris of Atkins and Allee Autry of Cabot; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Lorene Nottoli, Ilah B. Randazzo, Jewel Railey, Ben Cooksey, Pete Cookey, and Albert Ray “Punk” Cooksey. Bird’s off-the-cuff sense of humor, practical jokes, and presence will be missed by all. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service on Wednesday February 8, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Union Grove Freewill Baptist Church. Friends are asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Atkins Branch of the Pope County Library System. Memorials can be made in person at the library or sent to: Atkins Centennial Library, 216 NE 1st Street, Atkins, AR 72823.
