George E. Bailey Obituary

George E. Bailey, Jr., 90, widely-known retired grocery salesman, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, at a Little Rock hospital. He was born September 22, 1918, the son of George E. Bailey, Sr. and Imo Yandell Bailey Fisher. He was named Atkins citizen of the year in 2008 and he and his wife, Mary Anna, were named marshals of the Atkins Christmas Parade in 2006. Mr. Bailey was active in church and Gideon work and was known for his sense of humor and love of wisecracking. He was a salesman for Cheek Wholesale Grocer Co. for more than 40 years. Mr. Bailey was a veteran of World War II, when he was a waist gunner and engineer on B-24s in the Pacific. He and his wife were both loyal members of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Atkins. He also played football at Atkins High School and Henderson State University and was a member of the Atkins High School Hall of Fame. His wife of almost 67 years, Mary Anna, preceded him in death May 10. He is survived by one son, George Howard Bailey of Maumelle; a granddaughter, Lucinda Dorminy and her husband, Sean; and three great-grandchildren, Laurel, Bailey Ann, and Wilson. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Lemley Funeral Home and the funeral at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Atkins. Burial with full military honors will be at the Atkins City Cemetery. The ceremony will include draping of the flag by Zackary Murdoch and Josh Tyson. Pallbearers will be William Cleo “Bill” Cheek, Jr., Van Allen Tyson, John Thomas Tyson, Robert Henry Tyson, William Cleo “Bill” Cheek, III, James Earl Cheek, Robert Lewis McCollum and George Richard Cheek. Honorary pallbearers are Troy Burris, Sean Dorminy, Larry Lingle, Raymond Wiley, Elmo Haney, J.B. Murdoch, Alvis Tackett, Bill Murdoch, Quentin Murdoch and Gary Murdoch. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Presbyterian Church, 206 N. Church St., Atkins, AR 72823.
