James Calvin Gipson

James Calvin Gipson, Sr., 77, of Atkins, went to be with his Lord and Savior on February 14, 2009, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville. He was born December 10, 1931, in Atkins the son of William Calvin and Alta Bernice Faucett Gipson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Edgar Ray Gipson and Charles Allen Gipson, 2 grandchildren, Warren and Eric Nygaard and a nephew, Gary Boyce. He retired from the Arkansas Highway Department. He was an ordained Free Will Baptist minister for 33 years and pastored churches in Blackwell, Kenwood and Caglesville, Arkansas. He was a member of the Kenwood Free Will Baptist Church. He was married to Anna Laverne Bratton on October 29, 1949 and together, they raised seven children. He loved to fish and camp with family and friends at Sweeden Island Park. He enjoyed old time gospel singing and playing his guitar around the campfire. He taught his children, grandchildren and the neighborhood kids his love of playing dominoes and pitch. He never met a stranger. He touched so many lives through serving his Lord. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Laverne Bratton Gipson of Atkins; sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Sherri Lynn Gipson of Atkins, Robert Dennis and Karen Hart of Odessa, Texas, James Calvin, Jr. and Leslie Gipson of Wasilla, Alaska; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry Ann and Ernest Barnett of Eagle, Idaho, Cathy and Greg Smith of Wichita, Kansas, Diane and Kenneth Matthew Anders, Sr. of Highland, Illinois, Laverne and Rick Chisum of Pottsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Carnell and Bobbie Gipson, Carl and Bobbie Gipson, Bobby Harold Gipson, Jimmy and Carolyn Gipson, Jerry and Tanya Gipson, Danny and Evelyn Gipson and Larry and Chris Gipson; sisters Marilyn Jean Boyce and Judy and Bobby Higgins; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Thursday, February 19, 2009, at Lemley Chapel with the Rev. J.C. Kinder officiating. Burial will be at Atkins City Cemetery by Lemley Funeral Service. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Brent Jason Barnett, Kenneth Matthew Anders, Jr., William Carl Gipson, Jr., David Allen Gipson, Kenneth Matthew Anders, Sr., Ernest Howard Barnett, Rickey Eugene Chisum, and Greg Smith.
