Jerry Akin

Jerry Akin, 56, of Pottsville died Saturday, May 5, 2012 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was born April 3, 1956 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the son of Gerald R Akin Sr. and Dorothy Rannenberg Akin. He served the River Valley for 25 years as the owner of Fleet Tire. He was a part of the Pottsville First Baptist Church family, member of the Pottsville Masonic Lodge #333, member of the Russellville Airport Commission and a constable and retired law enforcement officer. He was a former volunteer fire fighter at Sylvan Hills, a former Pottsville Ball Park Commissioner, past president of Arkansas Independent Tire Dealer Association, and was the founding President of Pottsville Lion’s Club. He served 17 years as a member of the Pottsville School Board where he served as president for many of those years. He was the recipient of The Pinnacle Award, one of the highest honors given by the Arkansas School Board Association, and was a Master School Board Member. He was a charter member of the Pottsville Apache ‘press box crew’ and a member of the Pottsville Scholarship Committee. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susie Bass Akin; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Brandi Akin; two grandchildren, Jace and Lia Kate Akin; his mother, Dorothy Akin; a brother, Terry Akin and wife Shelly; brother-in-law, John Humphreys; mother-in-law, Margarette Bass; 3 brothers-in-law, Jim Bass and wife Beverley, Henry Bass, and Mike Bass and wife Jeannie; sister-in-law, Kathy and husband Tom Ridgeway; and 12 nieces and nephews, A.J., Alissa, Stephanie, Lisa, Amy, Kimberley, Amanda, Mike, Jr., Brandi, Terri, Laura, and Mary. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 8, at the Pottsville Junior High Auditorium with Bro. Jim Huffman officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites is in Pisgah Cemetery by Lemley Funeral Service of Atkins. Visitation is Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Pottsville First Baptist Church. Pallbearers are Freddie Williams, Greg Standridge, Gary Huggins, Ben Morgan, Ralph McCormick, Paul Fuller and Keith Griffen. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Pottsville School Board and the Pottsville Masonic Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pottsville Community Scholarship Fund, in memory of Jerry Akin, c/o Pottsville School District, attn: Larry Dugger, 7000 SR 247, Pottsville, AR 72858.
