Lola Mae Hays Obituary

Lola Mae Matthews Hays, 106, passed away August 23, 2014, in Hot Springs. She was born November 16, 1907, in Atkins, to William James and Sarah Mae “Sally” Boyd Matthews. After graduating from Atkins High School, she moved to Ft. Smith to attend St. Edward’s Nursing School, where she graduated in 1931. Lola married Roy Hays June 23, 1933. She was a Baptist and member of Second Baptist Church of Hot Springs and First Baptist Church of Atkins. Lola worked as a registered nurse at the Methodist, Army and Navy, and St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Hot Springs. While working at St. Joseph Hospital, the Sentinel-Record printed a photograph May 7, 1967, along with the caption: This is a part of the coronary care unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Set up last October by Mrs. Lola Hays, R.N., left, supervisor, and Mrs. Roberta Campbell, R.N., head nurse, right seated. It was the first in Arkansas and is still the most complete. Lola was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Gladys, Catheryn Matthews Harrison, and Evelyn Matthews Britt; daughter-in-law, Mary-Lynne Whyman Hays of Corvallis, Oregon; and step-granddaughter, Denise Denison. Lola is survived by her two sons, William David (Patti) of Hot Springs and Phillip Roy Hays, PhD, of Corvallis, Oregon; four grandchildren, David (Sherry) of Bonnerdale, Steve (Susan) of Dayton, Texas, Suzanne Massa of Little Rock, and Gary of Royal; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one step-granddaughter, Lauri Denison McAdory of Benton; four step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson; and former daughter-in-law Nancy Wibel Adams of Royal; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family wishes to thank the staff of Quapaw Care and Rehab of Hot Springs, where she lived the last two weeks of her life, for their compassionate care. She was also blessed with wonderful care by the staffs of West Shore and Garrett Manor of Hot Springs. Funeral is 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 26, at Lemley Chapel with Rev. Robbie Jackson officiating.
