Shirley Ann Marquette, 92, of Fort Smith, Arkansas passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday January 8, 2018 in a local hospital. She was born on June 15, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to August and Mary Keller and moved to Fort Smith in 1966 with her husband of 74 years, Don Marquette, and her children. Don was transferred to Fort Smith by Whirlpool Corporation. She was a homemaker and an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church. Shirley was an avid volunteer for various charities in the Fort Smith area and was admired and beloved not only by her family and friends but by everyone with whom she came in contact. She was an amazing and loving person who cared about the underprivileged and suffering people of the world as reflected not only by her correspondence with Arkansas Senators and Congressmen who were her friends through the years but with people in the community whose lives she touched. She was particularly active with, and served on the Bost board in Fort Smith, to help brighten the life of children born with Down’s Syndrome. Rarely has a person been so admired, respected and loved as Shirley. She was a champion league bowler, an avid tennis player, an excellent bridge player, a lover of the environment and she passed on her love for reading books and writing to her children. Her family grieves the loss of this beautiful, kind and gentle soul butwill always remember her smile, laughter and great intelligence and wit. She was preceded in death by her son Jim “Jimmy” Marquette. She is survived by her husband of 74 years Donald Marquette; a son, Robert “Bob” Marquette and his wife Madeline of Fort Smith,Arkansas; a daughter Lynn Moore and her husband Lee of Fayetteville, Arkansas; five grandchildren, Ashley Marquette Graham and her husband Steven of Tyler, Texas, Lauren Marquette and her husband Daniel Balls of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Samantha Curlett and her husband John of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Marq Moore of Bentonville, Arkansas and Jake Moore of Russellville, Arkansas and four great grandchildren. Alyssa and Jonathan Graham and Lucas and Jack Curlett. All of the family thanks Brookdale Senior Living and Peachtree Hospice for the loving care and respect shown Shirley during the last months of her life.
