CSM Joseph Henry Driver Obituary

CSM Joseph Henry Driver of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at the age of 88. He was born May 4, 1929 in Marianna, Arkansas, the son of William Darrell and Vera May (Welch) Driver. Mr. Driver was a United States Army veteran, serving 29 years, 4 months, and retiring with the rank of Command Sergeant Major. During his military career, he did tours of duty in both Korea and Vietnam, and was stationed in Germany for three tours. He earned multiple commendations for his courageousness, including two Bronze Stars. The final years of his Army career were spent stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Following his tenure in the military, Mr. Driver earned an Associates degree from St. Phillips Community College, while working at HEB Grocery Company. He retired as Fleet Maintenance Supervisor after five years of service. Mr. Driver was a member of the American Legion Neil-Griffin Post #47, Veterans of Foreign Wars Collier-Massey Post #4683, and Disabled American Veterans Charter #34. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, bowling, and spending time with his family. Mr. Driver was a member of the Holden Avenue Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Nina Louise (Mustain) Driver; one son, Micheal Driver; one daughter, Linda Sue Driver; three brothers, William Jackson Driver, Fred Lee Driver, and Edward Eugene Driver; and his parents. Mr. Driver is survived by three sons, Randy Driver of San Antonio, Texas, David Driver of Sherman, Texas, and John Driver of Newport, Arkansas; one daughter, Sharon Denham and husband, Eddie, of Newport; seven grandchildren, Mary Hancock, Cris Driver and wife, Ami, Joby Driver, Wendy Ross, Cory Driver, Amber Kappler and husband, John, and Keely Blanford; eleven great-grandchildren, Chelsey Hancock, Ethan Albert, Madison Driver, Christian “Bubba” Driver, Jaylynn Ross, Mariah Ross, Naomie Ross, Seth Goshorn, Alyssa Goshorn, Kayden Macks, and Alexis Driver; one great-great grandson, Zarron Mitchell; many other family members, and a lifetime of friends. Friends may visit at the funeral home, Saturday, October 7, 2017, 10:00-10:30 a.m. Graveside services will follow at Sandhill Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., with Mr. Ryan Wilson officiating.
