Mary Smith Lewallen Obituary

Mary Alice Smith Lewallen, 80, of Jonesboro, formerly of Tuckerman, departed from this life September 16, 2017. She was born on February 23, 1937 to L. E. and Rhoda Mahaffey in Randolph County. Mary was a retired teacher who touched the lives of many students in Tuckerman. Mary Alice loved her family. She was the mom who was always there for her children, whether to attend one of the countless events and ballgames or to guide them in learning responsibility and kindness. The house that she designed and Shelby built in Tuckerman was full of love and laughter, not only for her family, but also for friends of all of her kids.She was a member of Southwest Church of Christ, and loved the members of her bible class. Next to her family and church family, she loved the Arkansas Razorbacks. For many years, shewas a seamstress and enjoyed many arts and crafts hobbies. After retirement, she volunteered at St. Bernards Gift Shop, enjoyed traveling, bowled in a league, had fun at water aerobics with her friends, made many friends at Senior Citizen’s dances, andplayed dominoes with a group of friends weekly. Preceded in death by her husband Shelby M. Smith; her parents; and three brothers, John Mahaffey, Louis Mahaffey, and Hugh Mahaffey. Survived by her husband Lewis Lewallen, of the home; daughters Debby (Larry) Jones of Jonesboro, Marilyn Wiles of Fayetteville, Patricia (Rick) Carson of Mulberry, and Tim (Debbi) Smith of Beebe. After marrying Lewis, Mary gained two daughters Karen (Terry) Massey, of Jonesboro, and Sharon (David) Eubanks of Jonesboro.She is also survived by nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 19, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jackson Funeral Home in Newport. Funeral Services will be Wednesday September 20, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Swifton Church of Christ. Burial will follow in Swifton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Breaking Chains Honduras, P.O. Box 20454, where her grandson John ministers, Oklahoma City, OK 73156 or NEA Breast Cancer Support Group, who kindly supported her through the years, P.O. Box 16373, Jonesboro, AR 72403. Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Rick Carson, Larry Jones, Chris Prather, Matt Carson, John Carson, and Garrett Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Adam Woodruff, Dr. Steve Woodruff, Dr. Michael Isaacson, and Bo Riley.
