Billy Ray Hamett

Billy R. Hamett, 74 years of age, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, August 29, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Fresno on January 1, 1941, to Samuel and Lois Hamett. After graduating from Central High School in 1958, Bill enlisted in the Navy and completed his boot camp training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. Thereafter, Bill was stationed at various prominent Naval Bases including the submarine base in Pearl Harbor and the Treasure Island Naval Base in San Francisco. During his naval career, Bill served aboard numerous Navy vessels including USS Coucal (ASR 8), USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31), USS Chicago (CG 11), USS Cleveland (LPD 7), USS Frank Knox (DDR 742), and the USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG 20). Bill was an exceptional sailor and Officer that served with distinction in the Vietnam War. Throughout his naval career he earned multiple awards and commendations including the Naval Achievement Metal (w/ Combat V), a Combat Action Ribbon, a Navy Unit Commendation, three Good Conduct Metals, the National Defense Service Metal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Metal (Korea), a Vietnam Service Metal, a Vietnam Campaign Metal, and a Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm Metal. Bill retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1977. For the next 20 years, Bill worked in the civil service, and thereafter spent 10 years in private sector. Although Bill was a great serviceman, his greatest achievements were as a devoted husband to his wife, a champion father to his four children, a loving grandfather to his seven grandchildren, and a straightforward, enduring friend to many. He is survived by wife Gladys Hamett; son Mark and wife Shirley; daughter Gayle and husband John, daughter Brenda Hamett, and daughter Sandi Hamett; grandchildren Melissa, Jennifer, Mark, Patrick Bailey, Ashley Gies, John Gies (J.R.), Hanna Hibbs; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. Bill is also survived by his boots! He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Lois Hamett; brother, Kenneth Hamett, and sisters, Juanita Hudson and Myrna Brownfield. Bill will be loved and missed immensely by his family. Stories of his valor and inherited attributes of his character will descend through his family for generations to come. Memorial and Naval honors commemorating Bill’s service to his country will be conducted Saturday, September 26, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Community Mortuary Chapel at 855 Broadway, Chula Vista, CA 91911.
