A long illness ended the life of Erick R. Egertson on June 9, 2013, age 75, near his home in Temecula, CA. He is survived by Harriet Frederick Egertson, his wife of just short of 53 years, his brother Randall Egertson, five beloved nephews, and members of his wife’s family and that of his brother. He was also one of 14 (11 now surviving) much beloved cousins of a large family of Norwegian immigrants. Erick was born in Slayton, MN, and moved with his family to California when he was in middle childhood. His parents, Leone C. and Oswald L. Egertson were educators and Erick also chose education as a career. He graduated from high school in Fullerton and received his BA in Philosophy in 1959 from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He and Harriet were also married in Tucson in 1960. He then attended and graduated from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Berkeley, CA, and was ordained in 1963. Upon receiving his doctorate in 1968 from the Graduate Theological Union, also in Berkeley, he accepted a position at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, NE, where he taught philosophy and religion until his retirement. Soon after, he and Harriet moved to Temecula, to be closer to family. Throughout his life Erick enjoyed learning and teaching. He was contemplative and valued clear thinking. He was highly ethical and passionate about justice, especially for those people around the world whose life circumstances made it less likely that justice would find them. As a teacher, he most enjoyed working with serious students; among his favorites were those who left no doubt that their education was important to them, especially nurses. Harriet would tell you that his knowledge of logic made it difficult to win an argument with him. He was a very serious golfer and greatly enjoyed the game in the company of good friends and members of the family. He loved to travel. Being a loving uncle was of utmost importance to him. He leaves behind beloved family members, treasured colleagues, friends, and former students. Many of his friends are in Nebraska and he stayed in close touch through the Internet and through at least annual trips back to see them. A family remembrance will be held at a later time; his ashes will find their way to places that he loved.
