Obituary written and submitted by family Eugene P Rutherford Gene passed away November 25, 2018 in Murrieta California at the age of 99. Gene was born in Omaha, Nebraska, April 4, 1919. He had one sister who died at the age of 7 years. His father was a railroad engineer and spent a great amount of time away from home, so Gene spent a lot of time with his grandfather. His grandfather lived in Omaha before there were stop signs and was a boy during the Civil War. According to Gene his grandfather was a character and shared many stories. He had a love for history and was also a great story teller. Gene spent two years working and attended Iowa State College before WWII started. During that time he met his wife of 73 years, Eleanor. During WWII he was one of the first to fly B29 missions over the Hump from India. Later he was stationed in China and flew missions to Japan. On one of the missions he was forced to land in Siberia. There he was interned for 4 month and considered a POW. After the war he settled down in the Bay area and he and Eleanor raised twins Lynne and John. Gene got a job with IBM before computers were invented. He had a very successful career managing employees that repaired mainframe computers. Gene was a family man and his most favorite things in the world to do were camping and fly fishing with the family. In later years Gene and Eleanor traveled the world. In 2000 Gene and Eleanor moved to the Colony in Murrieta. Gene enjoyed sharing stories with people, activities in the Colony and going to the Murrieta United Methodist Church. Gene was fortunate to live independently to the end of this life. Gene is survived by the twins, Lynne and John, 5 grandkids and 8 great grandkids.
