Judith Marie Peterson Obituary

Former Arvada, Colorado resident Judith Marie Peterson died Sunday September 10, 2017 in a traffic accident a mile from her home in Arvada. She was 73 years old. Judith Marie Peterson was born to Max and Bernadine Engelbrecht on July 17, 1944 in Sharon, Kansas. In the Summer of 1951 the family moved to a farm 6 miles East of Cheyenne Wells. She had an older sister Janice and two older brothers Gerald and Norman, a younger sister Jean and younger brother Bill. Growing up on a farm she much preferred to help her Mom inside with cooking and sewing than doing any of the outside chores with her Dad. Spending more time inside with her Mom is probably how she became such a great cook and good at many crafts such as sewing, crocheting and cross-stitch. She also participated in 4H throughout her school years in addition to being a cheerleader. Judy with 3 of her friends sang and danced performing for numerous groups such as senior citizens and were even on the local radio. In 1962 Judy graduated from Arapahoe High School. It wasn’t long after she met John Gould, who was in Cheyenne Wells for a short time on a military assignment, that they were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She spent the next 4 years in Bridgeport, Connecticut where her first daughter Patricia Marie was born on March 23 1966. They moved to San Rafael, California in 1969. On November 29, 1971 Heather Ann was born. After divorcing Jack, Judy moved back to Thornton, Colorado in 1974. A few years later she met Alan ‘Pete’ Peterson who had two children Deborah and Michael and the 6 of them moved to Arvada, Colorado. Judy and Pete got married in a chapel in Las Vegas on August 3, 1977. They just celebrated their 40th anniversary. Most of her marriage to Pete, Judy worked as a Property Manager for Home Owners Associations. For many years Judy and Pete enjoyed square dancing and Judy sewed all of their outfits. They had fun playing Pitch with Judy’s family. Once Judy started taking golf lessons about 25 years ago so she could join Pete on the golf course, she was hooked! They loved to travel anyplace they could play golf. Up until her last days Judy was still playing golf 3 times a week through the summer and whenever the weather would allow it in the winter. Over the years she had many dogs but most recently she adored her Maddie and had just fell in love with her newest puppy Billy who she adopted while she was in town for her brother Bills Funeral last month. Judy enjoyed playing Bunko with her sister Janice once a month and spent time with her daughters as often as she could. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and her great grandson Austin who was just born this past January. They loved their grandma dearly. Preceding Judy in death were her parents Max and Bernadine Engelbrecht and her younger brother William Engelbrecht. Those left to cherish her memory are her children Patti Gould and her husband Terry of Arvada, CO, Heather Carson and her husband Craig Carson of Thornton, CO, her step children Deborah Lynch of Arvada and Michael Peterson and his wife Michelle Peterson of Arvada. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Gerald Engelbrecht and his wife Barbara of Cheyenne Wells, CO, Norman Engelbrecht and his wife Gail of Loveland, sisters Janice Denison and her husband Kenny of Westminster and Jean Whitney and her husband Mark of Westminster, as well as several nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Fossil Trace Golf Course in Golden, Colorado. Funeral Service arrangements were entrusted to Aspen Mortuaries in Arvada, Colorado. The family of Judith Peterson would like to express their appreciation for the first responders, the Arvada Police Department and the caring citizens who stopped to help at the scene of their accident. We would also like to thank all friends and family for the outpouring of love, support and generosity shown to our family. All the flowers cards, money donations, food and your prayers, sympathy and words of comfort were greatly appreciated. Your kindness and thoughtfulness will never be forgotten.
