Darlene B. Maxson passed away May 14, 2020 and joined God’s choir. Darlene was an Iowa farm girl, born July 24, 1924. She attended country school, graduated from Thompson High School, and went to Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City, Iowa, before seeking employment in Denver, Colorado. She married her high school friend, Robert W. Larson, a P-47 pilot in the USAAF, who two months later lost his life in a training accident in England. She then took the civil service exam and worked at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Aurora, Colorado where she met and married a veteran, Richard ("Dick") L. Maxson, also born in Iowa, who had been hospitalized there. They were blessed with five children and lived in Colorado Springs most of their 70 years together, snow-birding in Mesa, Arizona for 19 winters after retirement. When the children were all of school age, Darlene went back into the medical field and worked 25 years for a surgical team who did open-heart surgery here in Colorado Springs. Her husband, age 94, died in November 2014. Darlene was active in her church’s Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Dorcas Society, and Prayer Circle. She was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and travelling in their motorhome. They enjoyed Canada, several National Parks, and seeing their families around the country. 1974 saw them visiting Scandinavia as an extension to a Lutheran heritage tour in Germany. At ages 87 and 91, she and Dick traveled to Costa Rica. Darlene will be remembered as a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents, Nels and Ruth Rognehaugh; a brother, Emery Joe; two sisters, Rowine and Nola; and a son, Gary Maxson, a Vietnam Veteran. She is survived by sons: C. Kent (Jan) Maxson and Richard G. (Stephanie) Maxson both of Colorado Springs; daughters Karen Zimmerman of Huron, South Dakota, and Deanna (Wayne) Riddering of Atascadero, California; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.
