Dennis Dean “Denny” Wohlhueter, age 71, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, passed away September 16, 2011 in Colorado Springs. He was born February 6, 1940 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Fox Wohlhueter. Mr. Wohlhueter attended Belle Fourche’s schools and graduated in 1958. He played varsity football for Belle Fourche High School when he was in the 8th grade and was the youngest player ever to play varsity and start all their games. He received numerous football awards including the best South Dakota player, named by the Sioux Falls newspaper. Dennis also played basketball and summer league baseball and ran track. In his junior year, the Belle Fourche Broncs won the state tournament in basketball, the smallest school in South Dakota ever to do so. In 1958 he received a full ride scholarship to Colorado State University for football. He played for the Rams until his graduation in 1962 with a degree in finance and accounting. As a senior, he was named “best defensive back” and was elected by his teammates as their “Captain”. In 1960 he married his high school sweetheart, Linda Jane Howell. In 1962 the family moved to Denver, Colorado. Dennis worked for a finance company until such time the First National Bank of Colorado Springs offered him a position. He worked for them until he went to work for Academy Boulevard Bank and later was the Manager and Vice-President of Western National Bank on Academy Boulevard. During his retirement he drove the school bus for District 11. He coached little girls softball and was a member of Sertoma Club. Dennis was an avid soapbox derby supporter and was a sports enthusiast. He loved fishing, camping and hunting, but especially loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Linda Howell Wohlhueter; a son, Kirk (Glenn Marshall) Wohlhueter, his 3 daughters, Kari (Mike) Dominquez, Kim (Neil) Parker and Kelly Alie Wohlhueter; one sister, Roberta Ayala; two brothers Don Wohlhueter and Jack Wohlhueter; and eight grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at First Congregational Church 20 E. Saint Vrain Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice or The American Cancer Society
