Donald Leroy Oldes
February 25, 1949 – August 17, 2012
Donald Leroy Oldes passed away unexpectedly on August 17, 2012 in Colorado Springs. Born February 25, 1949 in Compton, CA to Orrie “Bud” and Mary (Hanawalt) Oldes, Don graduated from Hawthorne High School in CA in 1967. He loved surfing at Redondo Beach and being an all-around beach bum! Don served in the U.S. Army-F Troop, 17th Cavalry, 190th Infantry Brigade from April 1969 until November 1970. Before receiving an Honorable Discharge, he served in Vietnam and was proud to be a Vietnam Veteran.
Don worked for many years at Wells Fargo Alarm Services in Van Nuys, CA before moving to Colorado in 1990. Since 1993, he had worked for Colorado Springs School District 11 and had spent the past 15 years as the Building Manager at Andrew
Jackson Elementary School. He loved his family, his job and all of the children, jazz music, chocolate chip cookies, and La Carreta Mexican Restaurant where he was a regular. Don had a very fun sense of humor, constantly joking around and playing innocent pranks. He was a friend to all he met and would always help someone in need.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Matt) Tuck, granddaughters Kirah and Lily, sister Lynda Kimes, brother Daniel (Deborah) Oldes, nieces Kimmy (Thomas) Ball, Paula Kimes, Cindy Oldes and Katrina (Aaron) Langevin, as well as four great-nephews and his best friend, Joe Archuleta.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29 at Blunt Mortuary, 2229 W. Colorado Avenue with a Celebration of Life to follow at 4:00 p.m. at Andrew Jackson Elementary, 4340 Edwinstowe Avenue.
