Dr. Rev. Robert G. Dunbar Obituary | Condolences Dr. Rev. Robert G. Dunbar, known as R.G. and Papa (Dunbar), went to be with The Lord on January 27, 2014. He was almost 88 years of age. Dr. Dunbar was a long time resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He and his family arrived in the Colorado Springs on July 4, 1959 with a revival tent that was set up in the vacant field that was just across the street to the original St. Francis Hospital. After the tent revival, He bought the church building at Weber and Platte and then built Lighthouse Temple at 111 No. 32nd Street, in 1968. He and a member of the Church laid all the moss rock that decorates the interior and exterior of the church on 32nd.R. G. was saved and healed from MS at the age of 16 and he went to Bible School shortly thereafter. He graduated from Beulah Heights Bible Institute in 1946, and was in full-time ministry until his complete retirement in April 2010. To help pay for his college tuition, he drove cattle and broke horses during his time in Wyoming.For 14 years, He was an Evangelist and some years preached more than 400 times a year. He traveled and preached in all the continental states except Maine as well as in Canada and Mexico.Dr. Dunbar sat on several boards during his career and was always a sought-after speaker at the Christian fellowship conferences held throughout the states. R.G. Dunbar was born on February 13, 1927 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. He married his childhood sweetheart, Vernice M. Sellin on August 9, 1947. R.G. and Vernice would have been married 64 years. He is predeceased by his wonderful wife Vernice M. Dunbar (May 27, 2011), and his only sibling, Alyce M. Wenninger (July 27, 2011) and her husband, Dr. Joseph Wenninger, (January 19, 2010). Papa is survived by his five children, in birth order, Susan D. Weixelman, (husband Jim), April D. Dunbar, Rev. Robert R. Dunbar, (wife Carol), Tammy D. Scott, (husband Chris), Vernie L. Mesa, (husband John) and "Like Family", Carla Lopes. He has 4 grandchildren, Robert G. Dunbar Weixelman, (wife Coty), Spencer E. Dunbar Argueta, (husband Orlando), Katie Lee Scott, and Alexie Joy Mesa. He also has 3 great-grandchildren, Ethan R. Weixelman, Amber M. Argueta, Dominic U. Argueta, and another great-grandchild due in June. Dr. Dunbar's home going celebration service will be held at Lighthouse Temple, 111 No. 32nd street this Sunday, February 2, at 10:30 a.m. His son, who is now the pastor of Lighthouse Temple, will be officiating the service. You are invited to join the Dunbar family and church body in remembering this powerful servant's life. As a courtesy to the clergy of Colorado Springs, who he loved, there will be time to pay their last respects after their morning services between 12 Noon & 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. The family wants everyone to remember him as he was, so these will be closed casket services.We are elated that Papa has gone to be with the Lord, Mama Dunbar, other family members and countless people that were lead to the Lord during his time as an dynamic evangelist and pastor.
