Ernest McHugh

Ernest A. “Mac” McHugh, age 91, passed away in his sleep at a care center in Colorado Springs on September 4, 2011 following complications from COPD. He was born on August 4, 1920 in Wolbach, Nebraska a son of the late, James and Carrie McHugh. Mac served in WWII with the US Navy as Chief Pharmacist Mate where he met and married Marian Rice in 1944. After WW II, Mac attended the University of Nebraska, where he received a degree in pharmacy, and then continued for a master’s degree. Mac worked for Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company as a regional representative for 32 years and he retired in 1982. Mac was active in community theater and summer stock in Spencer, Iowa; Ottumwa, Iowa, and Colorado Springs. After his retirement, he was involved with Recreational Ministries at First Presbyterian Church. He taught senior dance aerobics for over 17 years at the church. He enjoyed his grandchildren and attending Spanish and computer classes at local colleges. Mac is survived by his loving wife Marian and five children: Ed, Ernie, Gene, Evan, and Maureen; with eight grandchildren and three great-grandsons. A commemorative service is planned for the end of September at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Mac’s name to First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs.
