John Bunge Obituary

John H. Bunge, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 15, 2013. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on November 9, 1929. In 1933 the family moved to Tecumseh, Nebraska, where his father opened a Gamble hardware store. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1947. He was preceded in death by his parents John H. Bunge, Sr. and his mother Caroline (Huttenmeyer) Bunge, a brother Warren Bunge, and a granddaughter Sarah Kathleen Young. He attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in 1951. At college he met his wife Claire Joan Peterson of Sioux City, Iowa. The couple was married on June 24, 1951 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Soon after that they moved to Long Beach, California, where he served as principal of St. John’s Lutheran School from 1951-1959. In 1959, the family moved to Colorado Springs where John served as principal of Immanuel Lutheran School from 1959-1969. In 1961, he received his Master’s degree from Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois. In 1969, he began teaching math and coaching track at Washington Irving Junior High until he retired in 1987. After retiring, he returned to Immanuel Lutheran School where he taught and served as principal until his final retirement in 1991. Music was an important part of John’s life. He played both piano and organ and served as one of the church organists at Immanuel Lutheran and while in California. He loved his family very much and always shared his time and love with them. John enjoyed golf and will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He and Claire traveled to Germany twice; one trip was to study their roots and a wonderful trip to the Holy Land as well as trips to Hawaii. He is survived by his loving wife Claire of 62 years, a daughter Colleen Joan (Jim) Young, a daughter Ruth Ann (Bruce) Robinson, both of Colorado Springs, a son Mark Paul (Mary) Bunge of Broomfield, Colorado, six grandchildren: Kate Young, Annie (Paul) Tuttle, Nathan (Krista) Robinson of Colorado Springs and Erin (Ben) Fernandez, Paul Bunge and Caroline Bunge of Broomfield, Colorado, two great grandchildren: Madeleine Claire and Liam Bruce Fernandez of Broomfield, Colorado and a very soon third from Nathan and Krista Robinson. Also, a sister-in-law, Norma Bunge, of Santa Ana, California. A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 18th, from 5:00-6:30pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 19th at 11:00am at Immanuel Lutheran Church at 846 E. Pikes Peak Ave., Colorado Springs. A reception at the church will follow after the service. Burial will precede the service at 10:00am at Evergreen Cemetery for family and friends. The family requests that memorials be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
