Marcia Roderick Obituary

Marcia Alice Young Roderick went to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on August 8, 2011.  She was born May 13, 1920 in Colorado Springs.  Her grandfather, pioneer George M Young, came here in a covered wagon in 1865. He was listed in the original Colorado Springs city charter and built many stone structures in town including Lowell School and buildings on the Colorado College campus.  Her mother’s family homesteaded in Husted, Colorado, now part of the Air Force Academy.  After graduating from Colorado Springs High School and Blair Business College, Marcia began her civil service career at Camp Carson in 1941, working in personnel.  She and her roommate, Maxine Overton, opened the Contemporary Gallery and Art Shop in 1956 and Marcia operated it until 1973. She reentered civil service at the Fort Carson Community Hospital until her retirement in 1986. In addition to working full-time, Marcia had many volunteer activities. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she joined the Monte Rosa Rebekah Lodge #4 in 1941, where she served as secretary for 50 years and on the board of Pikes Peak Towers.  She was a member of the Christian Business and Professional Women’s Council for 20 years and held many offices including president. After joining First Presbyterian Church in 1954, she taught 3rd grade Sunday school for 35 years and became a deacon in 1989.  Marcia spent much of her life helping seniors and delivered Meals on Wheels for a decade. Marcia often said, “The only good thing about money is the good you can do with it.” Our family requests that you honor her memory by making a donation to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers. “Aunt” will be dearly missed by her sister-in-law Nadine, nieces Cheryl and Cyndi, nephew Barry, great niece and nephews Tia, Jeremy and Brian, her caregiver and great niece JR, and their families. Visitation will be from 4:00 Pm until 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Evergreen Funeral Home 1830 E. Fountain Blvd. Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. Graveside services and interment will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 12, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery.  A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs.
