Mary Sawyer Obituary

Mary Sawyer, 89, of Colorado Springs, died July 3, 2011, after a brief illness. Mary was the wife of the late Gordon Sawyer, loving mother of Gary Sawyer of Harvard, Massachusetts, Blair Sawyer of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Steve Sawyer of Lubbock, Texas, and sister of the late Martha Nielsen of Fort Worth, Texas. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mary was born in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma on June 15, 1922, to M.H. and Cora Butts, but spent her childhood years in Texas. She attended the University of Oregon and graduated from the University of Nevada with a degree in education. She married Gordon on June 22, 1943, and they stayed faithfully together for 59 years until his passing in 2003. As Gordon pursued progressively better careers in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and Arizona, they centered their lives around one another and their sons. Through the years Mary worked as a teacher, real estate salesperson and executive assistant but particularly enjoyed her time as a church volunteer. She will be remembered most as a devoted wife and mother. Her faith in Christ was central to her life and brought her great joy, confidence, and peace of mind. Mary requested no memorial service for herself, but she would be pleased if her memory inspired a contribution to any Christian charity or ministry.
