Mervin T. Black “Papa,” age 91, a longtime resident of Colorado Springs, passed away October 15, 2011 in Colorado Springs. He was born on November 12, 1919 in Buffalo, Texas to the late Ben and Mable Black. Mervin served in the U.S. Army throughout World War II and the Korean War. He retired in 1962 as a CWO W3, having served for 20 years. After his military career he began working at Money Olds and retired in the early 1980’s as a Service Manager. He was a member of the Freemasons (32 Degree) of Colorado and a member of First Baptist Church of Colorado Springs for many years. He loved to write and even wrote his own autobiography, which his family and friends will always cherish for years to come. Papa will be truly missed by all who knew him, his memory will live on in his family. Mervin is survived by his wife of 33 years, Thelma; 3 daughters, Shannon (Jim) Penick of  Oklahoma, Judy (Steve) Webb of Colorado Springs and Susan Wharton of Grand Junction; a son, Tom (Judy) Black of Colorado Springs; 2 sisters, Bernice Lee of Texas, Betty Joe of Texas; 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel; 3 brothers, Marvin, Liston and Pete; a sister, Maudene and a great granddaughter, Brandi Hill. A Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd. Colorado Springs. Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM on Friday, October 21, 2011 at Evergreen Funeral Home Chapel. A private entombment will follow at Shrine of Remembrance. Donations in Mr. Black's name may be made to Hospice or a charity of your choice.
