Otis Woodcock Obituary

Otis E. “Woody” Woodcock, Sr., age 92, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2011, in Colorado Springs. He was born on June 23, 1919 in Littleton, North Carolina, a son of the late Ivey and Bessie Knowles Woodcock. The family moved into Morehead City, North Carolina during the 1930’s where he completed his primary education. Otis married Elena Wilson on December 2, 1940. They were married 66 years before her passing in April 2007. He is survived by his son, Otis E. Woodcock, Jr. and several grandchildren and many extended family and friends too numerous to mention. Otis had a distinguished military career in the U.S. Army, serving from December 5, 1940 to December 4, 1945; U.S. Army Air Corps from December 5, 1945 to September 18, 1957; and the U.S. Air Force from September 19, 1957 to May 31, 1966. Otis retired as a Senior Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force with a Commendation Ribbon for Meritorious Service. He was a lifetime member of The Friends of Fort Macon, The Carteret County Historical Society Inc. and Woodcarvers Association and a life benefactor of The Carvers Museum. Otis loved to spend his time woodworking while taking care of his wife through her illness. His passion was carving small dogs and small balls that were independent inside solid blocks of wood. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 7:00PM on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd., Colorado Springs, Colorado 80910. Graveside services and interment will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 9, 2011 at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs, with full military honor by the High Frontier Honor Guard from Peterson Air Force Base. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to The Carteret County Historical Society at 1008 Arendell St. Morehead City, North Carolina 28557 or www.thehistoryplace.org.
