Peggy Rowland Obituary

Peggy G. Rowland Dec 11, 1929 – May 14, 2012   Peggy Grooms Rowland, formerly of Longmont, died May 14, 2012 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.   She was born December 11, 1929 in Duncan, OK.  She graduated from Duncan High School in 1948, and from Oklahoma A&M with a degree in Physical Education in 1952. Growing up, she raised horses, and was a lifeguard and water safety instructor. While in college, she participated in synchronized swimming, diving, and the marching band. At one time, she was the youngest certified women’s basketball official in the nation. Upon graduating, she taught for two years in Washington and Oregon.   In 1954, Peggy married Ed Rowland. As he pursued his careers in the Army and in coaching football, they moved multiple times around the country. They especially loved their assignments in Alaska where the family enjoyed skiing, fishing, and camping. While there, she became a member of the National Ski Patrol. In 1969 she earned her MA in Elementary Education. She lived in Longmont for 17 years and retired as a Longmont Schools teacher in 1992. She and Ed traveled full-time in an RV until his death in 2010.   Peggy gave her life to the Lord as a girl, but in 1973 Peggy experienced a renewal of her faith and became a fully committed follower of Christ for the rest of her life. She was a member of Rocky Mountain Christian Church.   She will be remembered as a devoted mother and wife, as well as a respected teacher. Like her family, she loved animals, usually owning multiple pets. She valued God, family, and friends above all and was loyal and selfless in her devotion. Her family will remember her as a woman who was passionate about life and her beliefs.   Peggy is survived by two sons; Clay Rowland (Elizabeth) and Kevin Rowland (Julie); a daughter, Jan Feller (Kevin); and grandchildren Tacy, Janie, Rachel, and Garrett.   Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 19, at North Springs Alliance Church, 1702 Chapel Hills Dr., Colorado Springs, CO 80920. Interment will be at 1:15PM on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Fort Logan National Cemetery; meet at staging area C.   Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army and mailed to Evergreen Funeral Home in Colorado Springs.
