Richard Russell Smith, III June 25, 1920 – October 22, 2017 Richard Russell Smith, III of Colorado Springs, CO passed away peacefully at his home. He was born in Collingsworth County, TX, near the town of Wellington. He obtained a B.A. from the University of Texas in 1942 and a B.D. from the Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, in 1949. From Jan. 1942 until Nov. 1945 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a musician, band director and Staff Sergeant, and was stationed at Bryan AAF and Midland AAF in Texas. Following military service, he became a Methodist minister. Upon completing religious studies at SMU, he served various parishes in central Texas from 1945 until 1963. From 1963 until 1992 he worked as a sales agent, product manager, editor and consultant for various publishing companies that developed K-12 reading programs, textbooks, and curricula for public schools in the western states region. He retired from Western States Curriculum Services in 1992 and subsequently started two internet book publishing companies. He was preceded in death by his youngest son, Landgrave Willard Smith; his stepson, Earl Lee Smith; his second wife, Mildred Lorraine Smith; and his first wife, Wanda Willard Smith. Survivors include two daughters, Marsha Reeder of Aurora, CO and Eileen Anthony of Sherwood, OR; a son, R. Russell Smith IV of Dallas, TX; a stepdaughter, Bonnie Ann Smith of Colorado Springs; three grandchildren, Laura Anthony Heflin, Travis J. Anthony, and Emily Ann Smith; and one great-grandson, Robert Michael Anthony. A visitation will be held at Evergreen Funeral Home, 1830 E. Fountain Blvd on Saturday, November 4 at 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Private burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery.
