Shirley Coston Obituary

Shirley Jane Coston December 23, 1939 – May 27, 2013 Shirley Jane Coston passed away on May 27, 2013 at Penrose Hospital (Pikes Peak Hospice) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born on December 23, 1939 in Pueblo, Colorado to Sophie and George Nishikawa, the second of seven daughters. Shirley is survived by her husband, Joe, and her two sons, Edward (Tammy) and Sean (Jennifer). She was predeceased by her daughter, Caylene. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael, Steven, Kathryn, Brian, Joseph and Jacob, two great-grandchildren, Connor and Aiden, and four sisters, Barbara Myers, Charlotte Travis, Ermie Quintana and Christine Manzanares. Two sisters, Georgiana Loreto and Lorraine Garcia preceded her in death. Immediately after graduation from Pueblo Central High School in 1958, Shirley joined the Marine Corps. After basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, she was assigned to Camp Pendleton, California, as a telegrapher. Shirley left the Marine Corps in 1961 to pursue a career as a telegrapher at Pueblo Ordnance Depot, where she met her future husband, who she married on August 4, 1962. After living in Germany, Virginia, and Alabama, Shirley returned to Colorado in 1972, where she resumed her career as a cryptographer at FELEC Services Incorporated in Colorado Springs, before retiring in 1988. During her retirement, Shirley was active in the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Marine Corps League, serving as Adjutant on several occasions. Assisting with the Wounded Warrior Games and the monthly gathering of World War II veterans were a source of joy to her. As a sufferer of Arthritis and Lupus, she was active in the local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Shirley was an active Broncos fan and loved watching NCIS reruns on television. Her greatest joys were her husband of 50 years, her children, and being a Marine. OORAH!
