Barbara M. King passed away in her Durango home on Thursday, April 18, 2013, with her family at her side. Born Barbara Marguerite Stengel on January 30, 1936 in Boulder, CO to Louis A. and Marguerite M. Stengel, she grew up on the farm established by her paternal grandparents. A graduate of Mt. St. Gertrude Academy in Boulder, she married Roger Lawrence King, also of Boulder on June 16, 1954 at Sacred Heart of Mary in South Boulder Catholic Church. After living in a few homes in Nevada, California and Colorado, the Kings moved to Phoenix AZ in 1967. Upon Dr. King’s retirement in 1998, the couple moved “home” to Colorado, settling in Durango. Here they enjoyed a large circle of friends in their church and neighborhood communities. Although she occasionally worked outside the home before and during her marriage, Barbara’s commitment to her occupations as wife, mother, daughter, and grandmother was all pervasive in her daily life. She was a quietly strong woman who defined and cherished her role as “support team.” All who knew her recognized her true position – the glue of the family. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Roger L. King, and children; Mary Lucille of Chandler AZ, Debie Neely of Coolidge AZ, Mark King of Montrose, and Jackie Ellis of Durango. Eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren will dearly miss the “Ultimate Grandma” and “Cookie Fairy.” Her brother, Louis Richard (Dick) Stengel resides in Kremmling. A Catholic Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Columba’s Catholic Church on Saturday, May 11 at 11:00 AM to which friends far and near are welcome. A family celebration of her life and burial of ashes will follow at a later date in Boulder.
