Bonnie Fuller Obituary

On May 8, 2015, Bonnie Fuller of Durango, Colorado passed away in peace, at her home, surrounded by family, friends, and her dogs, after a fourteen month battle against cancer. Bonnie Lou Clements was born on January 14, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio -- the only child of Robert William Clements, who was AT&T’s Executive Recruiter for Bell Labs, and of Lois Lorene Thompson. Bonnie’s family thereafter moved to the Phoenix, Arizona area, where in 1965, Bonnie graduated from Tempe High School, at which time, she was cited one of its “most honored students,” due to her awards in science, math, and drama, and due to her winning two national competitions in journalism and English composition. Following high school, Bonnie earned a scholarship to Antioch College, in Ohio, from which she graduated in 1969, with distinction, with a B.A. in psychology and a B.S. in bio-medical science. She then entered the graduate school of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, on scholarship, to do research in animal behavior and population genetics, and where she collaborated with David Mech, Ph.D., the famous wolf biologist. In 1986, Bonnie married the love of her life, Jim Fuller, a board-certified neurologist, who likewise, identified Bonnie as the love of his life. This relationship has endured 29 years, up to the present day. Bonnie and Jim each had a child from a previous marriage -- Jim had a boy named David, and Bonnie had a girl named Arden, and the four of them together built a loving home, featuring compassion, sharing, learning, self-determination, and moral development. Bonnie became a Girl Scout leader, and Bonnie and Jim volunteered at St. Columba, in Durango, where their two children attended school. Bonnie and Jim maintained a high level of involvement in local and national political affairs, and this involvement rubbed off on their children. Bonnie was an accomplished seamstress, making many of her daughter’s beautiful clothes. Bonnie had an innate sense of stylishness, always choosing the perfect accessories to complete her and her daughter’s outfits. Bonnie was also an accomplished classical pianist, and as a result, all of the family picked up a musical instrument. Bonnie was a master craftsman, and a gifted artist in all media, designing countless elegant pieces of indoor decor for her family’s Durango home. The family often worked on these projects together. In 1997, Bonnie and her stepson collaborated on a 10-month major renovation of their house interior. Bonnie was a master of the culinary arts, passing on her cooking secrets to both Arden and David, such that each now cooks the meals for their families. Bonnie and Jim were recently engaged on a complete renovation, inside and outside, of their home, together, when Bonnie was struck by cancer. Jim will finish it. Throughout her life, Bonnie continued her love of animals, including adopting ex-racing greyhounds. Bonnie was loved for her warm heart, her generous spirit, and for her sympathy for those less fortunate than she was. Bonnie is survived by her daughter Arden, an attorney, and by her step-son David Fuller (Bambi), a corporate executive residing in Maple Valley, WA (and by two step-grandsons: Joshua Fuller and Theodore Fuller), and is survived by her husband, Jim Fuller, M.D. Bonnie was preceded in death by both of her parents.
