Clara Mayfield

Clara Maxine Mayfield, 96, of Durango, CO, passed away on May 31, 2012, at her home in Durango. She was preceded in death by her husband, Slim Mayfield, her sister, Annie Mayfield, her brothers, Holly Barnes, R.H. Barnes and John Barnes. She was born May 5, 1916 in Lubbock, TX to Perry and Pearl Barnes. She graduated from Sudan High School, Sudan, TX and attended West Texas State Teachers College in Amarillo, TX. She got her Master's degree at the University of Arizona, Phoenix, AZ. She married R. H. (Slim) Mayfield on October 2, 1937. They moved to the Animas Valley, La Plata County, Colorado in 1938 and ranched at Oxford until 1955. They moved to Ignacio, CO where Clara taught school until 1968. She started her teaching career at Horner School, south of Arboles, in a one room school with 7 students. She continued that career until age 70 when she retired from Bagdad Schools in Bagdad, AZ. That career spanned 43 years. She was instrumental in starting the Head Start Program in Ignacio and represented our country in Russia to learn about their educations system. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #17, Kingman, AZ, the Rebekah Lodge, First Southern Baptist Church of Midland, TX and enjoyed activities at the Senior Center. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon A. Mayfield/Cook of Durango, granddaughter Debbie Maddon and family of New Braunfels, TX, grandson Jimmy L. Williams and wife of Anaheim Hills, CA, great granddaughter Amber M. Everett of Durango, great granddaughter, Caitlin A. Williams of San Diego, CA, great grandson Matthew J. Williams of Anaheim Hills, CA, one sister, Opal Lechtner of Ignacio, CO, one sister-in-law, Gladys Barnes of Ignacio, CO, one brother-in-law, Jim Mayfield of Playas, NM, many friends and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives of the Barnes and Mayfield families. Graveside Memorial Services for Clara Maxine Mayfield/Carter will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Crestview Memorial Gardens located at Highway 172 and Highway 550. Pastor David McCaw will officiate. Lunch will be served for family and friends at 11:30 a.m. at the Pine River Valley Baptist Church on Highway 172. Memorial donations may be sent in her name to Cal Farleys Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1890, Amarillo, TX 79174.
