Diana Baker

Diana Kay Cambridge Baker, 80, died Thursday, September 11, 2014 at home in Hesperus, Colorado. A Funeral Service will be Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Ute Park Pastor Stan Formby will be officiating. Burial will follow at Ouray Memorial Cemetery in Ignacio. Diana was born on June 22, 1934 to the Ta’neeszahnii (Badlands Formations) Clan on west of the Shiprock volcanic formation near Hogsback, New Mexico. She had been receiving care from family and from Hospice of Mercy since July. She left this world the evening of September 11, 2014, at her home in Red Mesa, Colorado. Diana’s earliest memories including farming, horses and sheep herding with her siblings, and playing outside, before being orphaned at an early age. She attended primary and secondary school in Ignacio, Colorado, while living in the BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) dormitory located just outside of Ignacio, Colorado, on the Southern Ute Indian reservation. Diana married late Archie Phillip Baker and they had six children together. Their primary residence included Durango, Colorado, but they had also lived for short time periods in Californian and New Mexico. After 20 years of marriage, they divorced, but remained friends after. Diana’s past employment includes: Presbyterian Hospital (Albuquerque, New Mexico), Durango Threadworks, US Forestry summer work, Eventide Nursing Home, Community Hospital, and San Juan Regional Medical Center (Farmington, New Mexico). She enjoyed watching all her children and grand children participate in sports and outdoor activities. Diana also played 14 years in Durango Women softball as a pitcher. Diana was a former volunteer and Board Member of Durango Red Cross, and member of Aztec Bees Quilters. She was an active participant of events held by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, including the annual tribal fair and spring Bear Dance. She is the last member of her birth family. She is preceded in death by daughter Amelia “Boo Boo” Baker, She is survived by her children: Linda K. Baker of Durango, Carol J. Baker of Red Mesa, Colo., Robert L. Baker of Red Mesa, Raymond A. Baker of Bremerton, Wash., and Shawna M. Steffler of Aurora, Colo., grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
