Ed Alexander Obituary

Ed Alexander passed away peacefully, at home with his daughter by his side on December 7, 2014. Mr. Alexander died from Multiple Myeloma. A visitation will be held Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Hood Mortuary. A memorial service will be held at Hood Mortuary on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with internment to follow at Greenmount Cemetery. Ed was born on June 15, 1936 in Dove Creek, CO to William and Effie (Davis) Alexander, as the 5th of 7 children. He grew up in Cortez, Hesperus and the Durango area. Ed worked in his parents’ grocery store, Alexander Mercantile. He later worked for a metal salvage company, lumber mills, uranium mines and La Plata Electric Company. He joined the Navy in January 1956 and served until December 1959. The Navy took him many places, including Japan, Hawaii, Guam, Australia, Greenland and Korea. His favorite place was Australia, hoping to live there someday. After he was discharged from the Navy, he met the love of his life, Lena Contoleon, they married on December 9, 1961. Ed and Lena lived in Grants, NM, Medford, OR, Pagosa Springs, CO and then on to Durango, CO, until their final move to Bloomfield, NM in the 90’s. In 2011 Ed moved in with his daughter, Cheryl and son in law Pat, in Ignacio, CO. Ed loved to play the harmonica and the spoons. As a couple, Ed and Lena loved to go dancing, they could “cut a rug.” He enjoyed working in the yard and could grow just about anything from flowers and vegetables to bamboo. Another favorite hobby was woodworking and restoring old furniture. He especially loved fishing with his grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Lena; parents William & Effie Alexander; siblings; Kendall, William and Robert Alexander and his sister Georgia Archuleta. Ed is survived by his daughter Cheryl Esgar (Pat) of Ignacio, CO, son’s Eddie (Roxanne) of Farmington, NM, Marty (Kristine) of Bloomfield, NM, and Jimmy (Bonnie) of Bayfield, CO; sister Ruth Robbins of Bloomfield, NM and brother Richard Alexander of Grand Junction, CO; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Our family would like to thank Dr. Richard Keller, Dr. Gustav Hallin, Dr. Mark Saddler, Dr. Frank Mayer, Dan Keuning, ARNP, Julie MacCluskey, ARNP, Dr. Jonathan Clark, Dana Vander Veer, RN-hospice nurse, Air Options staff, the Dr.’s and nurses at Mercy Regional Medical Center and all of their staff for the exceptional care that they gave my dad.
