George Whitt

George Thomas Whitt left this world for the Kingdom of Heaven on January 24, 2014 at home in Ignacio. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at Ignacio Elementary School Multi-purpose Room (115 Ute St, Ignacio). George was born on December 2, 1935 to his parents Leon and Edna Whitt. He grew up in Nashville, Tn. with his 4 sisters and 1 brother. George served 10 years in the United States Air Force, during which time he became a radar specialist and flew as an airman first class in an Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWAC) radar plane during the Cuban Missile crisis. George met Laura Trease in Tucson, Ariz., and they were married on February 23, 1973. They moved to Laura’s family home of Ignacio in 1976. Among his many jobs in life were mobile home mover, road construction truck driver, contract mail carrier, hog farmer. He also served on the board of directors for the Los Pinos Fire District for just shy of 28 years, and as Mayor of the Town of Ignacio for 6 years. “He was the best Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother and Uncle! He will be greatly missed by all those whose life he has touched,” remembers his family. George is survived by his wife: Laura Whitt, daughter: Justa Whitt, and Grandson: Johnathon Whitt, all of Ignacio, son: George Whitt Jr. of Farmington, N.M., daughter: Georganna Wooten of Tucson, Ariz. two sisters: Veda Malone of Nashville, Tenn., and Phyllis Coble of Naples, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Los Pinos Fire District, 275 Browning Ave, Ignacio, CO 81137.
