James Box Obituary

James Lloyd “Horn Buckle” Box Jr., died Tuesday, January 2, 2018 in Dolores, CO, he was 42 years old. He was known as “Buffalo Horse”, which was his Native American name. A member of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe (Moache-Capote Bands of the Ute Nation), James was born October 24, 1975 in Durango, CO to James L. Box, Sr. (Southern Ute) and Regina Snipe Box (Shoshone-Bannock). After his mother entered into the spirit world, James was raised by Edward Box Jr. (uncle) and Betty Box (aunt), both of Ignacio. They both became his Native American traditional parents. In 1998, James met Summer Foss-Knight in Pocatello, ID. Kayden Gabriel Box (17) and Kyia Eileen Sunshine Box (15) were born to them in Pocatello, ID. In 2011, James moved back to Ignacio with his two children. He raised his children until they moved with their natural mother, Summer, in Soda Springs, ID. His family said James had a beautiful singing voice. He knew a lot of songs he learned from his Grandfather, Red Ute, and from his mother’s tribe. Growing up on the reservation, James would enjoy Bear Dance ceremony. He really liked singing bear dance songs with his Grandfather, until he would be get picked to dance. He was in the Ute Bear Dance movie and he explained how he enjoyed and prepared for the Bear Dance. James was preceded into spirit by his father, James L. Box, Sr. (entered into spirit world in 1999); mother, Regina Snipe Box (entered the spirit world in 1976); paternal Grandfather, Red Ute; paternal Grandmother, Blue Mist Woman; maternal Grandmother Louise Snipe; maternal Grandfather, Charlie Tone. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer M. Folsom of Dolores, CO; son, Kayden Box; daughter, Kyia Box, of Soda Springs, ID; Native American traditional parents, Edward & Betty Box, Jr. of Ignacio, CO; traditional brothers, Edward Box III (Anthony), Matthew Box (Susan), and Melanie Seibel (Shane), & Karen Washington, all of Ignacio; half-brothers, Jimmy Paul (deceased) and Coby Box of Ignacio; half-sisters, Selena Lucero of Dulce, NM, Cheyenne Box of Ignacio, CO; 18 nephews & nieces, and 6 great-nephews & nieces. His pet dog, Kimmer Box, was with him the day he entered the spirit world. A celebration of life will begin on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the St. Ignatius Catholic Church with a Recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 p.m., followed by a wake at the Southern Ute Memorial Chapel. His funeral mass will be held Friday, January 12, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. He will be finally laid to rest at the Ouray Cemetery in Ignacio, CO.
