John Maisel Obituary

John Carl Maisel, M.D., died in his sleep Saturday, March 10, 2012, in Mancos, Colo. He was 80. John was born December 31, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of Fredrick Carl Maisel and Enid Genns Maisel. He graduated from Baldwin High School in Baldwin N.Y., in June 1949. He furthered his education by graduating from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in June 1953, and then from Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y., in June 1957. John served in the Navy and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois, where he served as a medical doctor. He was discharged in 1962 with the rank of Lieutenant. He and Marilyn were married July 28, 1956, in Menands, N.Y. John was a practicing pathologist throughout his career, working at Porter Hospital in Denver, and Phoenix Baptist Hospital in Phoenix. In 1992 he took a position as a pathologist in the lab at Mercy Hospital in Durango. He retired in 1999. John was an active member in both his college and medical college alumni groups and belonged to many professional organizations throughout his practice of medicine. He was active in the Unitarian Church in both Tempe, Ariz., and Durango. When John wasn’t working, he loved being outdoors. Moving to Colorado was a way to access the outdoors. Hiking, skiing, and backpacking provided him with year round activity. He and Marilyn were so happy to come to Durango from Arizona. They spent their weekends and time off exploring the beautiful countryside in the area. John volunteered for many years for Habitat for Humanity. He loved music, and frequented the Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. He enjoyed the San Juan Symphony from their earliest days. An avid reader, John loved history-based stories and fiction. He is preceded in death by Marilyn E Maisel (McCully), his wife of 50 years, who died August 8, 2006. He is survived by son, Pete Maisel, and daughter, Bess Maisel, both of Durango; sister, Maureen Gaeddert of Varnville, S.C.; brother, Frederick Maisel, Jr., of Spencerport, N.Y.; three grandchildren: Taryn Maisel, Alyssa Maisel, and Kamryn Maisel, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. John requested that there not be a service. Family members will attend a scattering of the ashes later this spring. Cremation will take place at Hood Mortuary Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you make a donation in memory of Dr. John C Maisel, M.D., to the Class of ’57 Scholarship Fund at Albany Medical Center, c/o Albany Medical Center Foundation, P.O.
