John Toner

John Edward Toner of Pagosa Springs joined the cowboys in the sky February 6th, 2015 at home with his family by his side. Ed was 83. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm, February 13th, at Community United Methodist Church, 434 Lewis Street, Pagosa Springs, CO Ed was born in a log cabin on September 24th, 1931. He was one of the few people born in the Upper Piedra, CO. He road horseback across country to attend the one room Deb's schoolhouse until 8th grade. Ed graduated from high school in Durango in 1949. He went on to attend college at Colorado A & M (Colorado State University) where he met the love of his life Dorothy Short. Ed and Dorothy both graduated and started their adventure together. Ed was in the Air Force for 24 years. During this time, Ed and Dorothy had three beautiful children and they all traveled the world together. Upon retirement from the Air Force Ed and Dorothy came back to the Upper Piedra to return to his roots of being a cowboy in the country he loved. Ed was involved in the community serving as County Commissioner in the 1980's, Hinsdale County Road Foreman, representative on Southwest Water board, involved in The Community United Methodist Church, and the local and State Square Dancing Association. In early 1990's Ed and Dottie became snowbirds and spent their winters in Mesa, AZ. Ed is predeceased by his father Archie and by his mother Bess Toner. He is survived by Dorothy Toner. His three children Rodney Toner (Marquise) of Victorville, CA, Glen Toner (Linda) of Buckeye, AZ, and Cynthia Toner of the Upper Piedra, Pagosa Springs. Ed had 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his sister Peggy Case (Bob) of the Upper Piedra, Pagosa Springs; cousin John Taylor (Jean) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Community United Methodist Food Bank of Pagosa Springs.
