Leonard E. Thorpe, III, 66, died Thursday, August 28, 2014 in Durango, Colorado . Mr. Thorpe lived in Bayfield, Colorado for a short time to be close to his son and family. No services are planned at this time Len was born June 25, 1948 in Galveston, Texas, the son of Junior and Marie Thorpe. He grew up in Texas and North Carolina. Mr. Thorpe graduated from Texas A & M University with his bachelor’s degree in 1970. Len met his future bride, Sheryl Lyn Wintrode, while attending the university and they were married on July 18, 1970. He was then commissioned into the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and obtained the rank of captain. He was a navigator on B-52 Bombers. Len obtained his Master’s in Business Administration while serving. Upon his honorable discharge the family returned to Euless, Tex. and he went on to work for Vought Aircraft for 27 years as an industrial engineer. Upon his retirement, Len kept a home in Texas as well as Gunnison, Colo., near his son and family. He is survived by his son, Matt Thorpe and Matt’s Family: Billie, Kailee and Sam. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Sheryl in 2001. In lieu of flowers, please give in Len’s name to a charity of your choice.
