Margaret Decker Durango, Colorado Obituary

Margaret Decker

Margaret L. Decker passed away on April 6, 2012, at her home in Hesperus with her loved ones at her side. She was born July 18, 1922, in Model, Colo., to Robert Sweeney and Leona Devisher Sweeney. The family moved to the Durango area when Maggie was 10 years old. She attended school in Durango, and graduated from Durango High School in 1940, where she lettered in all sports. In October 1941, she and Bill Decker were married in Durango. Bill was the light of her life. They began their lives as ranchers at Vallecito, later making their permanent home at La Plata, N.M., where they ran sheep and farmed. Maggie was always busy raising two children, cooking for crews, being a farmer and irrigator and helping at sheep camp. Maggie was always known for her quick smile and kindness to everyone, and never knowing a stranger. She will be remembered for her popcorn balls and her great love of dancing. She lived 67 years at the ranch and wouldn't live anywhere else. Her daughter, Billie Decker, recalls -- "She was a free spirit with a generous heart, quick wit, and keen sense of humor. She will always be remembered. We love you, Maggie Decker." Maggie is survived by her son, William K. Decker, of La Plata, N.M.; daughter, Billie Louise Decker, of Durango; grandson Robert D. Decker of La Plata, granddaughter, Shanna Decker, of San Diego; grandson William T. Decker of San Marcos, and sister, Sylvia Nelson, of Lakewood, Colo. and two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill in 1980, and her parents, sister Evelyn and brother, Joseph. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Red Mesa Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
