Martha Rambo Obituary

Martha S. Rambo, 90, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Martha was born April 13, 1928 to Horace and Mildred Shirk in Cincinnati, Ohio. While in high school the Shirks moved out west to Phoenix in 1944 during the depression and rationing of items, including tires. During the trip they had several blowouts causing long delays in their travels. Three weeks later they arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they ran out of money. After finding a job for a short time they were able to continue on to Phoenix. Martha graduated from Phoenix Union High school, went to Phoenix College for two years and then attended Arizona State College (now ASU) prepping her to become a school teacher. She taught 1st and 2nd grades in King Hill, Idaho where she met her future husband Willard Rambo. During the school's Christmas Break, Martha and Willard traveled to Phoenix, where Martha's parents lived, and were married on December 28, 1950. In 1956 the Rambo's moved to southwestern Colorado where Willard found work. The first year they lived in 11 different locations with three children, all under the age of 4. Martha was involved with the Girl Scouts for twenty years. She was very active in the Bayfield Christian Church during her adult life and only missed Sunday services 3 times in the last twenty years. She had been the church secretary since 1969 and did many other things she enjoyed such as singing in the choir, playing the piano and even producing church newsletters. She is survived by her sons: Leland (Luann) Rambo of Durango, David Rambo of Farmington, NM, George Rambo of Bayfield, and Roger Rambo of Bayfield; Daughter: Gloria Furuya of Ignacio; a sister: Melissa Kelly of Fort Morgan, CO; Brother: John Shirk of Aurora, CO; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and many extended family and close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband and 2 granddaughters: Crystal Martinez and Michaela "Chaela" Rambo. A memorial service will be held on September 30, 2018 at 12 Noon at Bayfield Christian Church, 4995 C.R. 509 in Bayfield.
