Susan Herbst Obituary

Susan A. Herbst (Sue) of Durango, Colo., died at home on July 2, 2012. Sue was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1929 to Frank and Helen Reynolds Allen. Sue has lived in Durango since 1994. She grew up in the Midwest and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Nebraska. She and her husband Jurgen lived in Germany for several years early in their marriage. Prior to living in Durango, Sue lived in Madison, Wis., for 30 years and was active in politics. She served as an aide to Mayor Paul Soglin in his first administration. She managed the campaigns of local and national candidates and then ran for office herself and served for 12 years on the Dane County Board of Supervisors. She was known for her wise counsel and self-effacing style. She was recognized by the Madison YWCA as a “Woman of Distinction,” and upon her retirement from the Dane County Board, the Madison City Council declared March 8, 1994, “Sue Herbst Day” in recognition of her many contributions to the City of Madison. In Durango, Sue continued her community involvement with the League of Women Voters, the Child Assault Prevention Program of the Sexual Assault Services Association and the Women’s Resource Center. In her retirement in Durango she also delighted in spending time with her granddaughter Sheyanne. Sue was a lifelong feminist and her husband Jurgen supported and took pride in her activism. Sue is survived by her husband of 61 years, Jurgen, her son Kris Herbst and his wife Tiffany Montavon of Washington D.C., her daughter Anne Herbst and her partner Barbara McCarthy of Boston, Mass., her daughter Stephanie Herbst of Durango, her granddaughter Sheyanne Hunsinger of Eugene, Ore., her brother Pat Allen of Sedalia, Mo., and her sister Sally Marshall and her husband Larry of Phoenix, Ariz. Friends of Sue are invited to gather for a celebration of her life at the Durango Public Library between 3 and 5 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sue’s memory can be made to the American Friends Service Committee, AFSC Development, 1501 Cherry Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102.
