Thorn Mayes, 85, passed away on May 5, 2016 at his home in Durango. Thorn was born June 11, 1930. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1952 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked at GE, IBM and Honeywell. Thorn loved traveling the southwest and settled in Durango in 1983. He was an active member of the Durango Amateur Radio Club and enjoyed ham radio, electronics, tinkering in his shop, jeeping in the mountains and photography. He was a firm conservative and wrote many letters to editor of the Durango Herald. His remarks will surely be missed during the upcoming election! Thorn is survived by his wife Carol Mayes of Durango; Carol’s daughter Kim Catron of Raleigh NC; son Bruce Mayes of Eagle ID; daughter, Gretchen VanMaren of Tucson AZ; son, David Mayes of Phoenix AZ and four grand-children. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the NE Wireless Museum; PO Box 883, East Greenwich, RI 02818 or Mercy Hospice; 1010 Three Springs Blvd Durango, CO 81301. Services will be held Wednesday, May 11th at 10am at Hood Mortuary in Durango.
